10 Tips for Coping with Extreme Heat in Phuket

High season in Phuket = hot season. Sometimes the temperature can reach 40°C, and combined with high humidity, the effect is intensified. We’ve prepared a handy guide with simple tips to help you survive the extreme heat.

  1. Drink plenty of water. At least 2-3 liters, depending on your body type and lifestyle. It’s better to minimize coffee and alcohol, as they dehydrate you.
  2. Eat Thai food. It’s salty and spicy, which helps with thermoregulation.
  3. Use sunscreen. Make sure to apply a high SPF sunscreen before going outside and reapply every 2-3 hours.
  4. Take cool showers more often.
  5. Buy cooling wipes and spray, like those from 7/11. Regularly wipe your face, neck, and wrists to lower your body temperature.
  6. Wear a hat and loose clothing made from natural fabrics. Cotton or linen in light colors is the best choice.
  7. Get a portable fan.
  8. Exercise early in the morning or in the evening.
  9. Don’t overuse air conditioning. It dries out your respiratory system and skin, and drastic temperature changes can make you sick. Turn on the air conditioner for an hour before bed, but use a fan during the night.
  10. Avoid prolonged sun exposure, especially from 11:00 AM to 5:00 PM. No wonder you rarely see locals out on the streets during these hours – they know the risks.

‼️If you do get heatstroke, follow these recommendations:

🔸Seek shade, or better yet, a cool, well-ventilated space.

🔸Lie down flat.

🔸Wash your face with cool water.

🔸Drink plenty of still water.

🔸Apply a cold compress: place a wet towel on your forehead.

🔸Avoid physical activity, rest.

🔸If your condition worsens, consult a doctor!
