Phuket weather in May
May is a transitional month between the dry and wet seasons. Many tourists who decide to visit Phuket this month, worry about whether they will have time to sunbathe and swim. We can confidently say that you can tan, and even burn, in any month, and if there are raging waves on the main beaches, there is always an opportunity to visit the beaches without waves. But first things first.
🌡 Temperature
May is one of the hottest months. The average temperature during the day is more than 31 degrees (Celsius), and on hot days it can reach up to 38. At night, the average temperature is around 28 degrees. The water in the sea is also very warm – more than 30 degrees.
☀️ Sunny days
The beginning of the month is usually dry and sunny. Around the middle of the month, the monsoons start to arrive, bringing with them precipitation and clouds. The total average number of cloudy days is 12; the rest of the days are sunny or with variable cloudiness.
🌧 Rains
Around the middle of the month the southwest monsoon winds begin to blow, bringing tropical showers. On this month there it still doesn’t rain much, and usually it comes at night, but be prepared that during the day can suddenly come the wind and the pouring rain. Such rains are brief during the day and end in about half an hour.
🌊 Sea
The monsoons bring not only rain but also waves. The seas on the west coast can be rough; don’t ignore the red flags. They are often installed in places with a reverse current, which is very dangerous and insidious. If there is a desire to swim in calm water, it is better to go to the coast of Panwa, Ao Yan Beach, Tri Trang or Coral Beach on a neighboring island.
Despite the risk of bad weather, we think May, as well as the entire wet season, is a great time to visit Phuket. The debilitating heatwave subsides and temperatures become more comfortable. Accommodation prices get lower and the beaches become less crowded. And to be honest, there is definitely some kind of romance and beauty in a warm tropical downpour.
