The Most Controversial Fruit

For some, it’s a must-eat in Thailand, while others would never dare to try it. Of course, we’re talking about the Kingdom’s most controversial fruit — durian.

The main thing that sets durian apart (and often repels people from it) is its distinctive smell. For some, this fruit smells like rotten fish, garlic, rotten onions, dirty socks, and hydrogen sulfide. But those who dare to taste durian are in for a real treat: juicy flesh that tastes like custard, cheese, nuts, ripe bananas, and creamy ice cream. In fact, they say that the worse it smells, the sweeter the fruit is.

There are more than 30 different varieties of durian. The “King of Durians” is grown in Nonthaburi. Local farmers have been cultivating this fruit for over 300 years, and to ensure the fruit grows especially sweet, they water the trees with fresh water bought at great expense. The most delicious and expensive variety is called Kan Yao. Almost all trees of this variety were destroyed by typhoons, so Kan Yao fruits are considered very rare. They are even sold at auctions: the most expensive durian was sold for $48.000!

But you don’t have to spend that much to try this controversial fruit. Other durian varieties can also leave a very pleasant taste. In Thailand, two varieties are commonly sold — “Monthong” and “Chanee.” The former is generally preferred by Europeans. To check the ripeness of the fruit, gently press the flesh with your finger — it shouldn’t give in too easily; if it does, the durian is overripe. After that, ask for it to be peeled and eat it right away — this will make the experience much more enjoyable.

Here are a few more recommendations:

  • Don’t buy pre-cut fruit that has been sitting out for too long — oxidation will make it smell even stronger, and it may not be fresh.
  • Eat durian outdoors and, ideally, with gloves, so the smell doesn’t linger on your hands.
  • Don’t bring durian into your hotel/apartment/villa — the smell will follow you for a long time.
  • Avoid consuming alcohol with durian — they don’t pair well together.
