Traveling to Thailand with a pet: what you need to know
Transporting pets to Thailand requires careful and advance preparation. The import conditions for animals are quite strict due to the importance of preventing the spread of diseases. Let’s go over the key points that pet owners should consider when planning a trip or relocation to Thailand.
Vaccinations and microchipping
The most crucial (and challenging) part before the flight is ensuring your pet has received all the necessary vaccinations and gathering the required documents. Your pet must be vaccinated at least 21 days before departure against the following diseases:
-for dogs: rabies, canine distemper, hepatitis, parvovirus, and leptospirosis.
-for cats: rabies and feline panleukopenia.
Microchipping is mandatory for crossing the border. The microchip must comply with ISO 11784/11785 international standards and contain all essential information about the pet. It is inserted in the neck, withers, or shoulder area using a thick needle. The procedure is entirely painless, so there’s no need to worry.
Getting a pet passport
Just like you, your pet will need an international passport to travel to another country. This document is issued at a veterinary clinic immediately after completing all the necessary procedures.
Submitting an application to the Thai Department of Livestock Development
Another important step is submitting an application for pet transportation to the Thai Department of Livestock Development. This should be done no earlier than 1.5 months before departure, but it’s best not to delay. There are specialized companies that provide pet transportation services, but you can also handle it yourself by sending an email to Thailand’s Animal Quarantine Service. The email address depends on your destination airport:
- Suvarnabhumi International Airport (qsap_bkk_import@dld.go.th)
- Phuket International Airport (qshk_hkt@dld.go.th)
- Chiang Mai International Airport (qscm_cmi@dld.go.th)
In your email, briefly explain the reason for your request in English. Important! The request must be sent from an international email address. After providing the required information, you will receive an import permit via email, usually within 3-7 business days. This permit is valid for 45-60 days from the issue date. Make sure to print it out and bring it with you.
At the departure airport
Before checking in for your flight, you need to locate the airport’s veterinary control service. An officer will verify the following documents: your passport and flight ticket, your pet’s passport, veterinary certificate. In return, you will be issued an export certificate for your pet. You can also obtain this document in advance, but it must be in English — confirm this with your country’s veterinary authorities.
Onboard the aircraft
Each airline has its own regulations regarding pet transportation, including breed restrictions, size limits, and weight requirements. It’s essential to check these in advance with your airline to ensure a smooth journey for your pet.
Upon arrival in Thailand
After landing, you will need to spend some time at the airport’s veterinary control department (usually no more than 30 minutes) to have your pet’s documents checked. Additionally, you will be required to pay a 500 THB fee for your pet.
Special considerations for keeping a pet in Thailand
Once you arrive in Thailand with your pet, there are several factors to keep in mind regarding their care in a new environment:
Climate conditions. Thailand has a hot and humid climate, which may be uncomfortable for certain pet breeds. Be mindful of how your pet adapts to the weather.
Housing restrictions. 99% of Thai condominiums do not allow pets. Even in pet-friendly accommodations, there are often weight restrictions, meaning only small pets are allowed. If you have a large dog or cat, you will likely need to rent a house or villa instead of a condo. Always request permission from the property owner before moving in with a pet.
Pet health care. Regular veterinary visits and preventive treatments are highly recommended. Thailand is home to various exotic diseases and parasites that can affect both humans and animals.
Veterinary clinics and pet stores
Phuket is very pet-friendly, with many veterinary clinics and pet stores where you can find medical care, pet supplies, and food. Additionally, there are numerous pet-friendly cafes, making life with a pet much easier.
Having a pet is a big responsibility, especially when relocating to a country with a completely different climate. However, with proper preparation and by following all transportation regulations, you can ensure a smooth transition and happily reunite with your furry friend in your new home.
