Mai Khao vs Panwa

Mai Khao and Panwa are not the most popular areas of Phuket. They are located at opposite ends of the island and are far from the epicenter of tourist life, so few have appreciated their appeal for living and vacationing. However, like other areas of Phuket, they have their advantages and disadvantages. Let’s consider the main ones so you can make an informed choice.

Mai Khao

Mai Khao is a quiet area near Phuket Airport. One of its main attractions is the beach, where you can watch planes landing low, almost skimming the water.

Infrastructure. Mai Khao is famous for its luxury hotels. There is virtually no surrounding infrastructure, minimal traffic, and none of the hustle and bustle typical of tourist areas. The first beachfront resort in Phuket was opened here. The area also has a couple of large residential complexes and condo-hotels, but primarily it is home to luxury accommodations.

Attractions. For most, Mai Khao is known exclusively as a place to watch planes coming in for low landings. Tourists mainly visit to capture unique photos.

Additionally, Mai Khao Beach is a nesting ground for giant turtles that come ashore to lay their eggs. However, the major attractions of Phuket are located far from Mai Khao.

Mai Khao beach

Beach. Mai Khao Beach is the longest and least developed beach on Phuket. Stretching along the island’s northwestern coast for 11 km, it is part of the Sirinat National Park. Unfortunately, Mai Khao Beach is not very suitable for families with children due to its steep water entry in many places and strong currents.

Panwa

Panwa is located on the eastern side of Phuket. Its main advantage is the opportunity to enjoy the untouched natural beauty in a private setting.

Infrastructure. Geographically, Panwa is a cape with its central part covered in jungles, while the coastal areas are dotted with upscale hotels and villas. Panwa is often referred to as “luxury hidden from prying eyes,” as this area boasts many luxurious accommodations discreetly nestled behind the facade of a modest Thai village.

Panwa features two promenades: a long, well-maintained one near the aquarium, perfect for walking and jogging, and a quieter, simpler one. The area lacks a bustling infrastructure of numerous cafes, restaurants, and bars, but such amenities are unnecessary here since the hotels offer an abundance of these facilities.

Attractions. Panwa has two viewpoints offering stunning vistas: the Khao Khad Views Tower and the Kao Khad viewpoint. Other major attractions of Phuket are located far from Panwa.

Ao Yon beach

Beach. One of Panwa’s main advantages is its clean sea, clear water, and lack of waves. Swimming is possible here even during the low season. Panwa offers a mix of public, wild, and private beaches located on hotel grounds.

Undoubtedly, one of the best and most accessible beaches in Panwa is Ao Yon. It remains peaceful and uncrowded even during peak season and, most importantly, almost never experiences waves.

Mai Khao or Panwa?
The choice between Mai Khao and Panwa depends entirely on your preferences. Keep in mind that both areas are geared towards luxury hotel stays, as no other infrastructure is available in these locations.

If a beach holiday is a priority for you, Panwa is the better option, as its sea conditions are perfect for swimming. However, if you prefer secluded and wild beaches, Mai Khao is the ideal choice. Being part of a national park, it will impress you with its diverse nature.
