Question

Do they weigh carry-on luggage at the airport on the way back from Phuket?

Insider's Response

It depends on the airline. We recommend familiarizing yourself with the hand luggage requirements on the official website in advance.

If you have excess weight:

● Purchase additional baggage online before departure on the airline’s official website (it may be more expensive at the airport).
● Distribute items among companions if you’re not traveling alone.
● Remember that according to the rules of most airlines, personal items such as outerwear, handbags, umbrellas, laptops can be carried separately from hand luggage. But it’s better to verify this with your airline in advance.
● If you plan to buy souvenirs/alcohol, it’s better to do it directly at the airport – packages from duty-free shops are not counted towards your hand luggage/baggage allowance. We answered more details about duty-free shops in Phuket here.

Here are some life hacks on how to pack your baggage/hand luggage so that things take up less space:

  • don’t fold clothes, but roll them into tight rolls;
  • use vacuum bags;
  • use empty spaces inside shoes for storing socks, small items, or fragile objects;
  • use travel cosmetic sets or transfer liquids into small containers with a volume of up to 100 ml.
