Is it allowed to drink alcoholic beverages on the streets of Phuket?
Insider's Response
Thais practice Buddhism, which prohibits the use of any intoxicating substances. However, Thailand’s economy heavily relies on tourism, so there is no strict ban on consuming alcoholic beverages in public places. Naturally, alcohol is prohibited in temples, hospitals, pharmacies, educational institutions, recreational parks, and gas stations. But if you open a bottle of beer on the beach, it’s unlikely anyone will say anything to you.
In Thailand, the sale of alcohol in stores is prohibited between 2:00 PM and 5:00 PM, and from midnight to 11:00 AM. Alcohol sales are also banned during Buddhist and national holidays. See the article Holidays, Festivals, and Major Events in Phuket. In bars and restaurants, alcohol is sold around the clock. Look for the best spots in the Bars and Cafes & Restaurants sections.
Be cautious when buying alcoholic drinks in Phuket:
- Never buy anything “on tap” from shady vendors, especially on beaches and streets. There have been cases of poisoning, including from methanol.
- Avoid counterfeit alcohol — especially in cheap clubs and venues with a questionable reputation.
- If you’re buying alcohol at a bar, especially on Bangla Road, make sure the bottle is opened in front of you (in good bars, this is done automatically).
