Question

When is the rainy season in Phuket?

Insider's Response

When planning a trip, many travelers wonder when the rainy season in Phuket begins. It runs from May to October. During this time, monsoon winds bring unpredictable weather, frequent showers, cooler temperatures, and rougher seas. Yes, it’s considered the low season — but don’t be too quick to rule out these months for visiting the island.

The sea can be quite unpredictable during this period. Waves get higher, and the risk of rip currents increases. Read more about rip currents here. It’s important to watch out for beach warning flags that indicate sea conditions — get familiar with the flag system. We’ve also collected a list of safety tips to follow during the rainy season.

There are also upsides — this is when surfers catch the biggest waves. Find out where to surf in our Surfing article. And if you just want a swim, there are wave-free beaches where the sea stays calm year-round.

A key point: despite the term “rainy season,” this doesn’t mean constant downpours from morning till night. Rain usually falls at night or as short tropical showers during the day, often lasting no more than two to three hours. Learn more in our article Rainy Season in Phuket: Debunking the Myths.

There are clear advantages to the low season. When the rains begin in Phuket, the weather becomes less sunny, which means fewer sunburns and heat strokes. Another big plus: far fewer tourists, and prices for accommodation and activities can drop by two or even three times.

If rain catches you during the day, don’t worry — there’s still plenty to do in Phuket beyond the beach. For example, go on a café or restaurant tour (see our Cafes & Restaurants section), relax in a massage salon or spa, or enjoy shopping malls, which offer both retail and entertainment. The first real “seasonal” rains usually start in late May, a transition month when the heat eases and the air feels fresher. June, July, August, and September are typically the wettest months. Read more in our Phuket Weather by Month guide.

Of course, many people want to know when the rain ends in Phuket to plan the perfect trip. The high season runs from November to April. During this period, the sea becomes calm, the skies are clear, and the weather turns into that perfect postcard scene with blue skies, turquoise waters, and pristine sand.

Despite the seasonality, Phuket is a fantastic destination year-round. Life on the island stays vibrant in both high and low seasons — and we’ll help you find the best events in our Event Schedule.
