Question

Where does the police patrol the roads in Phuket? Where could they stop you?

Insider's Response

Police presence is most commonly seen around Karon, where the chances of being stopped are the highest.

What can they check?

  1. Valid international motorcycle license (Category A).
  2. Helmet. No helmet = fine.
  3. Insurance (for the vehicle).
  4. Vehicle condition and documents. License plates must be readable, and lights must work properly.
  5. Alcohol. You may be asked to take a breathalyzer test. The legal limit is 0.5‰, and for drivers with less than 5 years of experience – 0.2‰. Best not to drink at all.
  6. Speeding / driving against traffic. Lane discipline is enforced strictly, especially for motorbikes.
  7. Running red lights / ignoring pedestrian crossings.
  8. Parking violations. Motorbikes parked in the wrong places (especially in tourist zones) are often towed.

If you’re stopped and issued a fine (even if you completely disagree), do not argue with the police – it’s absolutely pointless. In Thailand, the law is always on the side of the local, not the foreigner. It’s easier to pay a small fine than risk getting into serious trouble.

Don’t forget that Thailand has left-hand traffic, which comes with its own peculiarities. We strongly recommend studying the Traffic Rules in Phuket in a dedicated article.
