Weather and seasons in Phuket

Let’s start with the main thing – it’s always summer in Phuket, hooray! The island is located just 872 km north of the equator, so the warmth never really leaves here. However, there is still some seasonality, and the relaxed heat gives way to rains.

Low season (also the “rainy season”; May – October)

Phuket is like a woman with a changeable mood. During this period, the island is affected by the monsoons, so rain is a frequent guest. But this does not mean you’ll be swimming through the streets instead of the sea. Most often, there are heavy but short-lived downpours, and many days still bring sunshine and temperatures around +32°C.

The sea during this period can be rough, and it is very important to pay attention to warning signs in the form of red flags on the beach (we’ve described all possible flags in more detail in this article). If you see such flags, it’s better not to play the hero.

The situation at most beaches requires vigilance – we recommend checking the “Waves” section in the above-mentioned Windy app before heading to the beach. If you’re unlucky with the weather and the waves are really big, there is always a solution in Phuket – go to the “Beaches without waves in the low season” section. There we’ve collected beaches where, from May to October, there are typically no waves at all.

We recommend reading our article “Things to do in Phuket in bad weather – 8 ideas”.

The low season has not only downsides but also significant advantages, which is why we love this period no less than the high season:

  • There are no crowds of tourists on the beaches, making seaside relaxation more peaceful and secluded. If you wish, you can even find completely deserted beaches.
  • Rental prices for villas, hotels, and apartments are much lower. For the same budget, you can afford accommodation of a much higher standard than in the high season.
  • There are fewer traffic jams and fewer people in pedestrian areas.
  • The weather becomes more varied, and nature becomes more lush and vibrant. You are likely to experience rain, sunshine, and cloudy weather, and you’ll see more greenery in the jungle.
  • Car and scooter rental prices are lower, and there is a wider choice of vehicles.
  • There is an opportunity to go surfing, for example at Kata Beach or Karon Beach.

High season (November – February)

Not just a season, but pure bliss! In November, rainfall decreases, the skies clear up, and the sea becomes calm and pleasant. Occasional night showers are possible, but overall it’s a true idyll.

From December to February, a paradise for sun lovers begins: the air warms up to around +35°C, and the water is warm and crystal clear, like glass. It’s the perfect time for swimming and exploring Phuket and its surroundings on excursions.

Dry season (March and April)

During this time, the heat reaches its peak and rainfall is minimal. The sea is calm, there is plenty of sunshine (perhaps even too much), and it is definitely not the time to neglect a hat and SPF.

On the plus side: prices are already starting to drop, while the rains have not yet begun.

We’ve put together a brief month-by-month summary in the form of a table:

Just a reminder. Questions like “What’s the temperature right now?”, “Is it raining?”, and “Will I get blown away by the wind?” are most accurately answered by the Windy app. This is exactly what we recommend for up-to-date weather forecasts in Phuket. Important: only look at the next 5–7 days, as forecast accuracy decreases significantly beyond that range.
