Rules for Carrying Fruits
Thailand is famous for its variety of exotic fruits, and many tourists who visit the country want to take some of these unique fruits home as souvenirs or gifts for their loved ones. We have previously written in detail about which fruits are a must-try in Thailand. However, it is important to remember that there are certain regulations regarding the export of fruits and other plant-based products. Following these rules is crucial to avoid any unpleasant situations.
Prohibited Fruits for Export
There are several fruits that, for various reasons, are not allowed to be taken out of Thailand. This list includes:
Coconut. The shell of a coconut is so dense that an X-ray cannot scan what is inside. Criminals may use coconuts as containers for smuggling illegal substances.
Durian. The reason here is simple – its strong and distinctive odor. Durian is not only prohibited on airplanes but also in hotels, apartments, and other enclosed spaces. You can read more about this unique Thai fruit here.
Watermelon and melon. Due to high pressure in an airplane, these fruits can explode. However, if you really want to bring a Thai watermelon or melon home, you can slice them into pieces.
Mangosteen. Officially, exporting this fruit is not prohibited, but it is not recommended to take it with you, as ants often nest under its leaves.
Packaging
When transporting fruits, they must be packed properly to prevent damage and minimize the risk of contamination. In Thailand, you will often find special baskets sold in fruit stores. These baskets are very convenient for carrying fruits, keeping them fresh and undamaged.
Rules for Carrying Fruits on Board Different Airlines
In Russia, passengers are allowed to bring up to 5 kg of fruit per person. This limit applies to both checked baggage and carry-on luggage. If the total weight exceeds 5 kg, Russian customs may require phytosanitary certificates. Other countries generally have similar regulations, allowing up to 5 kg of fruit.
Aeroflot. Fruits can be transported in both carry-on luggage and checked baggage, as long as they comply with the weight limits of your fare.
Azur Air. As of February 2024, the “Fruit Basket” service has been discontinued on Phuket-Moscow flights. However, fruits can still be transported in checked baggage or carry-on luggage.
Red Wings. Fruits can only be transported in checked baggage on flights with this airline.
Ikar. There are no restrictions on carrying a fruit basket, but its dimensions must not exceed 30×40×20 cm.
