Question
Are you sure there’s no problem exchanging old-style U.S. dollars in Phuket?
Insider's Response
Let’s break it down:
- The best exchange rate is offered for the new-style (blue) U.S. dollar bills from 2009, 2011, 2013, 2017, and 2019 in $50 and $100 denominations.
- Old-style (green) U.S. bills from 1996, 2001, 2003, and 2006 in $50 and $100 denominations are also accepted at a good rate. If any exchange booth refuses to accept these notes, offers a lower rate, or charges a fee – look for another exchanger, as they are likely trying to scam you.
We’ve written in detail about other tourist scams in Phuket in our article Scams in Phuket.
- As for “vintage” bills issued before 1996 – keep them as a souvenir. There’s a high chance they won’t be accepted.
Also, be aware that smaller denominations are exchanged at a lower rate. Torn, taped, or excessively crumpled bills may also be refused.
We recommend exchanging money only at official currency exchange offices and always double-checking and counting your money after the transaction!
