Question

Can you open a bank account in Thailand if you have a visa?

Insider's Response

Yes, if you have a visa, you can open a bank account in Thailand. Banks are most willing to work with holders of work, student, and other long-term visas — including the DTV visa. To open an account, you’ll need:

– a passport with a valid visa
– a local SIM card
– a Residence Certificate (issued at the immigration office), which confirms your address in Thailand

At the bank branch, you can open a debit account the same day. You’ll receive a non-personalized bank card, and if you like, you can also activate internet banking. The process usually takes between 30 minutes and a couple of hours, depending on the queue.

However, keep in mind that not all bank branches in Phuket open accounts for foreigners. You may need to visit several locations and check the specific requirements at each bank.
