If you live in Thailand permanently, you can make your financial routine more convenient and cost-effective. For example, you can pay by QR code in supermarkets and shopping malls, make purchases on Thai marketplaces, or pay bills in restaurants and cafes.
To make QR code payments, Thailand uses its national payment system PromptPay — similar to Russia’s Faster Payments System (FPS). This service is designed for domestic Thai payments and is much more advantageous for using banking products without commission fees (unlike foreign cards).
Can foreigners register for PromptPay?
Yes! To use PromptPay, you need a Thai bank account (THB current or savings account) and a mobile number or ID linked to that account. You can register either through your bank’s mobile app or in a branch.
What a foreigner needs to register for PromptPay:
1. Open a bank account in Thailand

2. Link or register your bank’s mobile app
Download your bank’s official mobile app and register. You can complete this step at the bank branch — staff will help you set it up quickly.
3. Register for PromptPay
- In your banking app, open the menu “PromptPay / Register PromptPay” (the name may vary by bank).
- Choose your registration method: by mobile phone number (the most convenient) or by ID (Citizen ID / for foreigners – passport or document number).
- Select the bank account you want to link for payments.
- Confirm the operation: the bank will send an SMS to your Thai number; enter the code in the app.
- Done! After verification, PromptPay will be activated for your chosen account.
If the banking app does not allow foreigners to register, visit a bank branch. The staff can register you for PromptPay manually. Bring your passport and an active Thai SIM card.
