Question

How does Phuket Airport operate during the peak dates at the end of December? How long are the passport control queues, and should you allow extra time for departure?

Insider's Response

Phuket Airport operates as usual at the end of December, but this is one of the busiest periods of the year. From around December 20 through the first days of January, the number of charter and scheduled flights increases significantly, especially from Europe, Russia, and CIS countries. Flights often arrive at the same time or close to one another, which leads to longer queues at passport control, and baggage claim can sometimes take longer than usual. Lines also form at check-in counters.

Should you allow extra time? Absolutely yes. Don’t forget about traffic congestion as well — taxis may take longer to arrive than usual. It’s recommended to allow at least an extra hour for your journey to the airport.

If you are short on time, there is a fast-track option available. This is an expedited airport service that allows you to bypass queues, pass through controls quickly, and save a significant amount of time.

This option is also available for departures. It can be arranged through a tour operator or specialized services, and the cost usually ranges from 1,500 to 2,500 THB.

Benefits of fast-track service:

● Priority check-in and security control
● Time savings and reduced stress
● The chance to relax, have a coffee, visit duty-free shops, or rest before departure
● Convenience for travelers with children or lots of carry-on luggage
● A comfortable end to your trip

By the way, if you made purchases in Phuket, don’t forget to claim your VAT refund. This also requires additional time. A detailed guide is available in our article Tax Free in Phuket — How Tourists Can Claim VAT.
