Is it safe to leave a motorbike in beach parking areas? How common is theft in Thailand?
Insider's Response
Thailand is a safe country, and you can generally feel secure here. It’s perfectly fine to leave your motorbike parked — thefts are uncommon. However, helmet thefts do happen occasionally, so it’s best to take your helmet with you rather than leaving it on the bike.
Serious thefts in Thailand are rare, but there’s always a small risk of encountering pickpockets, especially in crowded areas such as markets or beaches.
Forewarned is forearmed. Keep in mind the basic safety rules:
● Don’t leave money, jewelry, or valuables unattended — on the beach, in your hotel room, or in cafés.
● Store valuables and large amounts of cash in a safe.
● Take only the minimum amount of money you need to the beach.
● Avoid walking along the beach at night, especially alone; if you do, don’t carry money or valuables.
● Don’t wear expensive jewelry — it can be snatched from your neck or wrists.
● Don’t keep your phone or documents in outer pockets of bags or suitcases.
● Before going to a market or venue, bring only the amount of money you plan to spend.
● Carry your bag on the side opposite the road — bag snatching by motorbike riders can happen.
