Question

What documents are needed for a trip to Phuket?

Insider's Response

The required documents depend on how long you plan to stay in Phuket. If you’re traveling as a tourist, the process is simple and only a small set of documents is needed in advance.

● A valid passport with at least 6 months remaining before expiration.
● The Thailand Digital Arrival Card (TDAC)– a digital immigration form that must be filled out online 3 days before arrival. You can complete it on the website: https://tdac.immigration.go.th/arrival-card/#/home . If you’re traveling with family, one form can include details for everyone. You can either print the completed form or show it on your smartphone at border control.
● A return ticket – border officers may ask to see it if you don’t have a visa.
● Proof of accommodation – with the introduction of the TDAC, where accommodation info is included, this is usually not required. However, it’s still good to have, as it supports the purpose of your trip. Prepare it either printed or in digital form.
● Funds – not always checked, but official requirements state 20,000 THB per person or 40,000 THB per family (or the equivalent in any currency).
● Health insurance – not mandatory, but highly recommended. Medical services in Phuket can be expensive, and having a policy will help protect you against unexpected risks. For more details, see the Life Insurance section or fill out the form below.

Thai border officials are generally very relaxed and will typically only ask for a passport and, more recently, the digital arrival form.

Thailand has a visa exemption policy for citizens of 93 countries, allowing travelers to stay in the country for up to 60 days. For a short vacation, you won’t need a visa. However, if you plan to stay longer, you can apply for a special tourist visavalid for 90 days, with the possibility of two extensions – up to 180 days in total. Read more about that here.

If you’re planning to relocate to the island, the question becomes: what documents are needed in Phuket for expats? First, you’ll need to choose the right type of visa and then prepare the necessary documents based on your purpose of stay. The list is generally similar to what’s mentioned above, but proof of income is required and varies depending on the visa type.

In the section Visas and Border Runs, we’ve compiled the most common visa types for relocation. Each has its own document requirements, so we recommend working with professionals who can help you with the application and processing. Trusted visa service providers are also listed in that section.

Documents Needed for Traveling to Phuket with Children

Children over 14 years old need their own international passport. A child under 14 can enter Thailand if they are listed in a parent’s passport and carry a birth certificate. If a child is traveling alone or with someone who is not their legal guardian, a notarized travel consent must be arranged in advance.
