Question

What kind of vacation can you expect in Phuket in August?

Insider's Response

August in Phuket can be quite unpredictable. It’s part of the rainy season, but that doesn’t mean constant downpours for weeks on end. Rain usually falls at night, and during the day it often comes as brief, heavy showers that clear up within half an hour, giving way to cloudy or even sunny skies.

So, what is Phuket like in August? In short: cloudy and warm. It’s not your classic “beach month,” but for those who enjoy peace, pleasant temperatures, and don’t mind a bit of rain, August can be a great time to discover a different side of the island. Beach time is still possible, though it’s not the best season for diving or snorkeling due to choppy seas and reduced water clarity. On the other hand, surfing is in full swing this time of year — either try it yourself or enjoy watching pro competitions.

What’s the weather like in Phuket in August? Rainy. Expect rain on about 16 days of the month — usually short but intense showers. Daytime temperatures average around 31°C, and nights stay warm at about 25°C. Breezes are common and help keep things feeling fresh. There are typically 14 overcast days, 11 partly cloudy days, and just 5 fully sunny days. But be careful — even on cloudy days, the sun is strong, so don’t skip the SPF.

The sea temperature is around 29°C, but the water is often rough, with strong waves and rip currents on many beaches. Be sure to read up on warning flag meanings so you know when and where it’s safe to swim.

But don’t worry — we know which beaches are best for swimming in August. We’ve put together a special list: Beaches Without Waves. Many of these are also located on the west coast, near popular areas, so it’s easy to find nearby accommodation and reach the sea. For places to stay, check out our Accommodation section.
