Question

Will there be any changes in Phuket due to the mourning period following the Queen’s passing?

Insider's Response

On October 25, Thailand’s Queen Mother Sirikit passed away at the age of 93. After the news, alarming headlines appeared online claiming that tourists in Thailand had been “left without entertainment,” but in reality this is nothing more than clickbait.

After Sirikit’s death, government institutions were placed under a one-year mourning period and instructed to lower flags for one month. These restrictions do not affect tourists.

What changes have taken place in Phuket due to the mourning period?

Events and entertainment. The Thai government has not introduced bans on concerts, events, or alcohol sales. Some weekend markets in Phuket Town may be canceled, but this can only be checked on the spot. Large night markets with fixed schedules will operate as usual. You can choose where to go for dinner here.

Clothing recommendations. Thai citizens and government employees have been asked to follow a modest dress code (black, white, or muted colors) for 90 days. Government employees are required to wear mourning attire for a year. For tourists, this is more of a recommendation than a rule, but at religious sites (such as temples) it’s best to respect the request. See our Temples list and read the behavior guidelines in the article Etiquette in Buddhist Temples.

● Festivals and ceremonies. Major cultural events are not necessarily canceled, but may be adjusted in tone or moved to another date. At the moment, hotels and venues are actively preparing for Christmas and New Year and are publishing announcements of festive events. Here is the current events schedule for Phuket.

Recommendations for tourists from Insider:

● If you are planning a trip to Thailand, do not cancel it. The country remains open, welcoming, and positive.

● When visiting temples, choose modest clothing (shoulders and knees should be covered) and avoid bright colors.

● Show respect when discussing the monarchy. Public criticism has serious consequences in Thailand.
