Cheow Lan Lake: What Is It?

Cheow Lan is actually a man-made lake created after the construction of a dam. It is located within Khao Sok National Park, about 2–2.5 hours' drive from Phuket.

The main highlight of Cheow Lan is its breathtaking scenery. Massive limestone cliffs rise dramatically out of the water, surrounded by the ancient rainforest of Khao Sok, which scientists believe is even older than the Amazon rainforest.

People come here for a completely different experience than a typical sea tour:

  • peace and quiet instead of crowded beaches
  • traditional long-tail boats gliding between limestone cliffs instead of speedboats racing across the open sea
  • the atmosphere of a national park instead of tourist islands

There are no waves on the lake, so the trip is usually much more comfortable than a sea excursion.

A typical tour includes:

  • a boat ride across the lake on a traditional Thai long-tail boat
  • a visit to floating houses and restaurants
  • scenic viewpoints
  • caves or jungle trails
  • the chance to spot wildlife

Cheow Lan is home to monkeys, rare birds, monitor lizards, and sometimes even wild elephants along the shoreline.

Many visitors say that Cheow Lan becomes one of the most unforgettable experiences of their entire trip to Thailand.

The journey then continues to Cheow Lan Lake, where one of the most beautiful parts of the trip begins – a ride on a traditional Thai long-tail boat among limestone cliffs and jungle.

After lunch at a floating restaurant, you will check in to a bungalow on floating platforms right on the lake. Here, you can swim, go canoeing, watch the sunset over the water, and simply enjoy the atmosphere of complete silence.

In the evening, there will be a lake safari by long-tail boat. At this time, you may spot monkeys, rare birds, monitor lizards, and other wild animals that come closer to the water.

The night is spent in a floating hotel in the middle of the lake – away from city noise, roads, and tourist crowds. In the morning, another lake safari awaits, along with viewpoints, Suwan Khuha Temple, and a cave with stalactites and bats.

One of the main highlights of the program is the evening and morning lake safari. This is the time when there is a higher chance of spotting wild animals: monkeys, rare birds, monitor lizards, wild boars, and other jungle inhabitants.

On the second day, the program becomes even more diverse: Wang Nam Cave Temple, Khao Sok viewpoints, a waterfall, hot mineral springs, and an elephant spa that brings truly positive emotions.

The final part of the route is a bamboo rafting or canoe trip along the river through the jungle. A very peaceful and atmospheric part of the journey that perfectly completes the experience.
