Buddhist temple Mai Khao
Working hours: Mon - Sun: 06:00 - 19:00

The secluded temple is located in the village of Mai Khao, which shares its name with the nearby beach in the northern part of Phuket. Surrounded by tropical forest, it offers a peaceful place to walk amidst nature, let go of thoughts, and spend time alone in a sacred space. You can also explore other walking spots in Phuket via the link.

Several structures are nestled in the lush tropical surroundings. The main temple is designed in a minimalist style, without ornate decorations, reflecting a spirit of simplicity and focus on spiritual practice.

The chapel (Ubosot) houses relics — the remains and personal belongings of revered teachers, including the abbot of the temple, Phra Ajahn Daeng. The reliquary serves as a place to honor the memory of the teachers and the spiritual lineage of the temple. Their presence fosters a sense of connection between the living and the departed, enhancing the spiritual and cultural significance of the site.

In a neighboring temple building, behind protective glass, are several statues of Buddha and respected monks who made a significant contribution to the development of Buddhist culture. It’s a truly impressive sight!

Behind the temple is a garden with a lake, where trees grow and herons nest. It’s a very quiet and photogenic spot! In the center of the lake stands a prayer pavilion – a traditional sala. This structure is intended for meditation, prayer, rest, and contemplation, and is open to both monks and temple visitors.

Why you should visit Mai Khao Temple:

  • Peace and tranquility – a rare find in Phuket.
  • Unique format: temple grounds + a living pocket of nature – a blend of spirituality and ecology.
  • Photogenic setting – the temple, lake, and white birds create a serene and secluded atmosphere.

The temple is open to visitors daily from sunrise to sunset (usually from 6 AM to 7 PM). Entry is free, though donations are welcome.

Don’t forget the dress code: shoulders and knees should be covered, and shoes must be removed before entering the temple.
