Wat Mahathat Wachiramongkol Temple (Wat Bang Thong) on Krabi is located in Krabi Province. It was built in 1940 on donated land. For some time, this temple was not very well-known even among locals, let alone tourists.

The temple is located in the Ao Luek district of Krabi Province, approximately 50–70 km from Krabi Town. The journey takes about an hour. The most convenient way to get there is by rented transport — a motorbike or a car. There is a spacious free parking area on the temple grounds, so finding a spot for a car or motorbike is usually not a problem.

Entrance to the temple grounds is paid for foreign visitors — about 50 baht. For Thai citizens, entry is free.

As in all Buddhist temples in Thailand, a dress code applies here — shoulders and knees must be covered.

The main attraction of the temple is the central stupa. Its height exceeds 70 meters, and its beauty and abundance of gold are blinding.

A majestic golden chedi towers on the temple grounds, created in the image of the shrine in Bodh Gaya — the place of Buddha’s enlightenment. Paths surround it on all sides where you can see images of Buddha. Mythical figures, golden statues, majestic pagodas adorned with works of art — you want to take it all in with your eyes!

In 2002, a chedi was built in the temple in honor of the 50th anniversary of Crown Prince Maha Vajiralongkorn, who became the famous King Rama X. The temple gained fame thanks to the 109-meter golden pagoda, and attention to it began to grow. This pagoda is considered the tallest in Thailand.

There are also several other interesting sites on the temple grounds that often go unnoticed by tourists. One of them is the 32-meter statue of the Buddha “Opening the World.” It was built in 2018 in honor of Queen Sirikit and can be clearly seen from different parts of the temple complex.

The covered galleries lined with rows of golden monk statues make a particularly strong impression. The gallery columns are painted in rich red and blue colors, and the soft morning light makes this space especially photogenic.

At the entrance to the temple, you can see a statue of the revered monk Luang Pu Thuat, as well as a green statue of the god Indra, one of the important figures in Buddhist mythology.

If you go inside the main chedi, you can see murals that depict the life story of the Buddha and key events of the Buddhist tradition.

There is a small café on the temple grounds where you can buy drinks and snacks — a nice bonus for those who come here for a longer walk.
