Question

How to get from Phuket to Phi Phi Islands?

Insider's Response

Phi Phi is a stunning archipelago of six islands in Krabi Province. The location became especially famous after the release of The Beach, starring Leonardo DiCaprio, which was filmed in Maya Bay on Phi Phi Leh Island.

The main and only inhabited island in the archipelago is Phi Phi Don. It’s where all the tourist infrastructure is located, including the Tonsai Pier, where ferries from Phuket arrive. Visitors from around the world come for the breathtaking views, beautiful beaches, and vibrant nightlife. It’s truly a must-visit destination.

There are several ways to get from Phuket to Phi Phi and discover this island paradise.

The easiest way is to join an organized tour. Most tours include hotel pick-up and drop-off, a ferry or speedboat ride, lunch, and a guide. These are full-day tours, although two-day tours with overnight stays and beach parties are also available. Group sizes typically range from a few dozen people. This archipelago is worth exploring thoroughly, and we can guide you on the highlights. Start with the beaches of Phi Phi Don. For a relaxed day, head to Long Beach, which has all the necessary amenities. For nightlife, Lo Dalum Beach is the place — it comes alive after sunset. Nature lovers should visit Monkey Beach, where monkeys roam freely. Be cautious though — these cute animals can be mischievous! Read more in our article Monkeys in Phuket.

For natural beauty, don’t miss Maya Bay on nearby Phi Phi Leh — the famous beach from the movie. On the other side of the island, you’ll find Pileh Lagoon with turquoise waters and a serene vibe, as well as Viking Cave, known for its ancient paintings resembling ships. We’ve described these spots in detail in our guide What to See on Phi Phi.

If you prefer to explore independently, you can get to Phi Phi from Phuket on your own. Ferries and speedboats depart from Rassada Pier. The ferry runs several times daily depending on the season, and the trip takes about two hours. A one-way ticket costs from 800 THB, but round-trip options are more economical. Kids under 2 years old travel for free.

Speedboats are faster — you’ll reach Phi Phi in about 45 minutes. Tickets cost around 1,000 THB per person one way. One note: if you’re prone to seasickness, consider taking motion sickness medication like Dramamine before the trip, especially if the sea is rough.

The Phi Phi Islands are undeniably beautiful, but they’re not the only places worth visiting. Check out our Excursions section for more amazing destinations in and beyond Phuket.
