Peranakan is a word that comes from the Malay language. It means “born here” and is used to refer to Chinese of mixed ancestry. When a foreigner marries a local woman, their descendants are the ancestors of the Peranakan people. The Peranakan people had their own traditions, language, dress and rituals, different from the Thai.
The museum tells the story of Peranakan culture, a unique blend of Chinese and Malay traditions. It features collections of period costumes, household items, furniture and photographs, allowing you to immerse yourself in the life of the Chinese settlers.
The museum is located on two floors in a modern building. First you are greeted by Chinese-Portuguese style views of Phuket Town and the clock tower. The first floor houses Yaya Kitchen restaurant, Pinana Cafe, a traditional jewelry store and a photo studio where you can take interesting shots in Peranakan costumes.
On the second floor, a tour tells the story of the Chinese migration to Phuket. Chinese men traveled by ship to the island overcoming harsh conditions and storms. The most successful ones settled in the new country, married Thai women and built their homes. The reconstruction of such a house can be visited by visitors to the museum. There are many constructions there, referring to the past and showing the life and occupations of Peranakans.
