Here are some things to know before going to a restaurant:

Should you leave a tip? In Thailand, the “tipping culture” isn’t as strict as, for example, in the USA or Europe. However, leaving a tip is considered a sign of respect and appreciation for good service. In expensive restaurants, a 10% service charge is usually included in the bill. In that case, tipping is not mandatory but you can round up the amount if you wish.

What language does the staff speak? English is the main language used to communicate with tourists. Even in small cafes, waiters understand basic phrases like ordering food, asking for the bill, or inquiring about prices. This is even more true for highly rated restaurants. Moreover, in tourist areas like Patong, waiters often know key words in Russian, Chinese, or German — the languages most commonly spoken by visitors. Words like “hello,” “thank you,” “delicious,” and “bill” are often understood.

Do you need to book a table? We recommend booking, especially at high-end establishments.

Is there a dress code? The places mentioned in this guide don’t have a stated dress code. However, it’s important to understand that if a place positions itself as “fine dining” or “signature cuisine,” your attire should reflect that. We don’t recommend wearing flip-flops, Crocs, tank tops, or ultra-short shorts—dress appropriately in smart casual or simply elegant style.

Patong has many excellent cafes, restaurants, and bars. You can find the full selection in the ‘Cafes and Restaurants in Patong’ section. Additionally, in the ‘Cafes and Restaurants’ section, we offer other selections not only by area but also by cuisine type. By the way, we announce some gastronomic events, such as dinners by famous chefs, in our weekly Phuket Event Schedule.
