Question

How many islands are there around Phuket?

Insider's Response

Phuket can be considered the center of a small “sea-island” network. It’s surrounded by large archipelagos and small islands that you can visit on day trips or guided tours. For example:

  • The Racha Islands – Racha Yai and Racha Noi are known for their scenic bays and diverse coral reefs, making them popular for diving and snorkeling.
  • Coral Island is just 20 minutes from Phuket and is a great spot for families, with calm waters and no waves on most days.
  • Koh Rok and Koh Haa – remote, peaceful islands with untouched nature and rich marine life.
  • Rang Yai – a small island near Phuket offering walking trails and a variety of water activities.
  • Koh Panyee – a famous fishing village built entirely on stilts, home to sea gypsies.
  • James Bond Island – a world-famous spot thanks to the 007 movie.

So, how many islands are there around Phuket? Officially, the province of Phuket includes the main island and 32 smaller nearby islands, including all the ones listed above.

There are also two well-known island groups near Phuket, though technically they belong to other provinces:

Similan Islands: A group of 11 islands with white sand beaches, beautiful bays, and crystal-clear lagoons. The Similans are famous for diving and snorkeling thanks to their rich underwater world.

Phi Phi Islands: A popular archipelago of six islands, the largest being Phi Phi Don and Phi Phi Leh. It’s one of the most famous tour destinations — ideal for sightseeing, and if you stay overnight, legendary beach parties. If you want to explore the archipelago on your own, we’ve prepared a list of places for you.
