Chez Mori in Kathu, Phuket is a neat, cozy spot with a soft contemporary interior and genuinely comfortable seating — an easy place to linger over lunch and dessert. The dining room is kept spotless, a well-chosen selection of classic tunes plays in the background, and the service is attentive with that distinctly Japanese warmth.
The focus here is yōshoku — Japanese takes on Western comfort food — along with home-style cooking that puts ingredient quality first. The menu covers richly flavored curry rice, fragrant soups (including miso and mushroom), omurice with sauce, hearty meat dishes such as a wagyu hamburg steak, mentaiko pasta, and chilled noodles/udon served in a “salad-style” format. Sides and salads are generous, and the dressings are thoughtfully balanced, pairing nicely with both meat and vegetables.
Another strong reason to stop by is the selection of house-made desserts and cakes: a pastry case with individual treats, cheesecake, seasonal tarts, profiteroles, mochi, and a delicate caramel pudding. The sweets lean Japanese in spirit — moderate on sugar with pleasing, refined textures. Their signature highlight is the parfait, especially the matcha and caramel/Biscoff versions, layered with ice cream and cream for a clear, satisfying contrast of flavors and textures.
Drinks are solid too: good coffee, some refreshing citrus-based combinations, and matcha lattes. Prices feel fair for the overall quality. The menu isn’t huge, and the sign can be easy to miss from the road — using Little Seoul across the street as a landmark helps; there are also a few parking spots right out front. Fried items can occasionally come out a bit drier than expected, but overall the cooking is consistent and comfortingly home-like.
