What Is Surin and What to Expect on the Tour
Surin is not a single island but an archipelago of five islands surrounded by vibrant coral reefs. Its defining feature is the water, which is considered some of the clearest in Thailand, while its reefs are among the country's most diverse.
That’s why most people come here not for the beaches, but for the snorkeling. Put on a mask, and within seconds you'll find yourself immersed in a thriving underwater world.
But Surin has much more to offer than just snorkeling. Unlike many other islands, it has a unique atmosphere that feels like stepping into a different world. One reason for this is that one of the islands is home to the Moken people, also known as the sea gypsies, who historically lived a nomadic seafaring lifestyle and continue to preserve many of their traditional customs today.
It’s important to keep the seasonal schedule in mind. The islands are closed to visitors from approximately May 15 to October 15 during the monsoon season, when the sea becomes rough and the ecosystem is given time to recover.
Because of its remote location, Surin is less visited than Phi Phi or Racha Islands. Getting there takes longer, tours begin early in the morning, and not everyone is willing to commit to this type of trip. But that’s exactly what makes the islands so special.
