Wat Suwan Khuha (also known as Wat Tham) is a temple complex set inside a network of caves not far from Phuket, on the road toward Krabi and the famous James Bond Island. Its main highlight is a cave sanctuary with a large Reclining Buddha statue, hidden in a spacious chamber filled with stalactites. Inside, it’s dim and serene — soft light, the scent of incense, and a cool draft. The deeper you go, the more noticeable the humidity and heat become.

You can visit Wat Suwan Khuha as part of Samet Nangshe and Phuket Temples tours.

Exploring the caves feels like a small adventure: narrow passages open into larger halls, and smaller Buddha images appear along the walls and in niches. You’ll need to watch your step — there are plenty of stairs, and the rock can be wet and slippery in places. It’s best suited to visitors who feel confident walking and aren’t uncomfortable in the dark; the route isn’t ideal for very young children.

Outside, near the entrance, you’ll meet macaques — and there really are a lot of monkeys here. They actively beg for food and can be pushy, sometimes jumping onto shoulders, pinching, or scratching. Monkey food is sold on-site, but it’s wise to keep a close eye on your belongings and avoid getting too close to the animals.

Entry to the cave area is around 20 baht. A dress code applies: if your knees are uncovered, you’ll be given (or can rent) a wrap, which must be returned afterward. Toilets are available on the grounds — sometimes for a small fee — but the facilities are basic, so it’s a good idea to bring tissues and soap. The cave may be closed after 5:00 PM.
