How to get to the Phi Phi islands

Phi Phi is an archipelago of six islands in Krabi Province. We are used to this name, but in Thai, it is pronounced more like “Pee-Pee” (the “h” is barely noticeable, like a soft breath). This place became especially popular among tourists after the release of the movie The Beach, starring Leonardo DiCaprio, which was filmed in Maya Bay on Phi Phi Leh Island.

The main and inhabited island of the archipelago is called Phi Phi Don. This is where all the tourist infrastructure is located, along with the Tonsai Pier, where boats from Phuket dock. Tourists from all over the world come here for the stunning landscapes, Instagrammable beaches, and vibrant parties.

So, how can you get to these paradise Phi Phi islands from Phuket? We’ll explain in this article.

As part of a tour

The easiest way to get from Phuket to Phi Phi is as part of an organized tour. This is one of the popular excursion destinations. The tour includes transfer to/from the hotel, ferry or speedboat ride, lunch, and guide services. The trip is planned for almost a full day, and the group usually consists of several dozen people. You can read more about the Phi Phi tour here.

By ferry

If you’d rather travel with just your company and not depend on a schedule, you can get to the Phi Phi archipelago on your own.

Water transport to Phi Phi departs from Rassada Pier, located on Phuket’s east coast. The ferry runs several times a day, depending on the season. The sea journey takes about two hours. One-way tickets start at 800 baht, but it’s more economical to purchase a round-trip fare. Children under two years old travel for free.

Traveling by ferry is a comfortable way to reach Phi Phi. During the trip, you can sunbathe on the open decks, enjoy the scenery of the Andaman Sea, and sip on refreshing drinks.

Keep in mind that the Phi Phi archipelago is part of the Mu Ko Phi Phi National Park, and the landing fee for one adult on its territory is 20 baht.

By speedboat

You can reach Phi Phi from Rassada in just 45 minutes by speedboat. The fare is more expensive — starting at 1.000 baht per person one way. There’s one important point: some people experience severe seasickness on speedboats, so it’s advisable to take “Dramamine” beforehand or avoid this option altogether, as the journey could become quite uncomfortable.

Tickets for the ferry and speedboat can be purchased on the official Rassada Pier website or directly at the ticket offices. You can also buy boat tickets at tour agencies in Phuket and arrange a group transfer from your hotel/apartment to Rassada Pier for an additional fee.

How to get around the Phi Phi islands archipelago

All tourist infrastructure, including hotels and guesthouses, is located on Phi Phi Don. You can get around the island on foot, but it’s not recommended to venture too deep into the jungle, as it can be dangerous. To move between beaches and islands of the archipelago, you’ll need to use taxi boats (longtail boats). Prices depend on the distance to the island or beach you want to visit.
