Karon is one of the most popular areas on Phuket’s west coast. Its biggest draw is its long sandy beach, a wide shoreline, and a more relaxed atmosphere compared to Patong.

Karon appeals to both families and travellers who want to stay close to all the main amenities without the noisy nightlife.

Beaches

Karon is best known for its coastline. It is home to one of the longest beaches in Phuket, and just a few minutes’ drive away you can find more secluded bays with clear water and excellent swimming conditions.

Karon Beach

Geo on Google Maps

Karon Beach is the main beach in the area and one of the longest on Phuket. Its wide shoreline, soft white sand, and beautiful sunsets have made it one of the island's most iconic beaches.

Karon Beach is known for its unusual quartz sand, which squeaks underfoot.

During the high season, the sea here is usually calm and clear, while in winter the water turns a vivid turquoise. Even during peak season, there's usually plenty of space on the beach.

Kata Beach

Geo on Google Maps

One of the most popular beaches in Phuket, with an easy access and beautiful scenery. Kata is easy to reach from almost any part of Phuket, and it is within walking distance of Karon Beach.

The wide stretch of soft white sand is ideal for sunbathing and long walks. Along the beach, you'll find food carts as well as vendors selling drinks and beach accessories. Public showers are available for a small fee.

During the high season, the sea at Kata is usually calm and comfortable for swimming, making the beach especially popular with families.

During the low season (May to October), larger waves make Kata one of Phuket's favourite surfing spots.

The beach is well equipped: there are sun loungers, umbrellas, showers, restaurants, and various water activities, including kayaking, catamarans, and jet skis.

Despite its proximity to popular resorts, the atmosphere here remains peaceful and uncrowded — a great option if you want to spend a comfortable day at the beach without large crowds.

Karon Temple and the night market on its grounds

Geo on Google Maps

Wat Karon is the main Buddhist temple in the Karon area, foundedin the late 19th century. The temple is adorned with traditional Thai pagodas, and the entrance to the main shrine is guarded by mythical naga serpents. Inside, visitors can admire colorful murals depicting the life of Buddha, as well as one of the temple’s most revered treasures — a black jade Buddha statue.

As an active place of worship, Wat Karon is visited not only by tourists but also by local residents who come here to pray and take part in religious ceremonies. Please remember to dress respectfully when visiting the temple — shoulders and knees should be covered.

Every Tuesday and Friday, the grounds of Wat Karon transform into one of the most popular night markets in southern Phuket. What makes this place unique is its combination of two sides of Thailand: traditional Buddhist culture and the lively atmosphere of a bustling Asian market.

Here, visitors can sample popular Thai dishes, fresh tropical fruits, smoothies, coconut ice cream, and other local delicacies. The market is a great place to buy souvenirs, clothing, cosmetics, handicrafts, and products made by local artisans.

While the market is open, guests are free to stroll around the temple complex and explore its beautiful architecture.
