Thai Tom Yum with Shrimp added to UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage list
This announcement was made by Thailand’s Minister of Culture, who emphasized that this dish is a source of national pride, a reflection of the Thai way of life, and the people’s deep connection to nature.
The application to recognize Tom Yum Kung (the official name for the shrimp soup) as UNESCO intangible heritage was first submitted in 2020, and after four years, the recognition has been achieved.
Tom Yum Kung is prepared using traditional ingredients such as shrimp, lemongrass, lime, chili peppers, fish sauce, and sometimes coconut milk.
Notably, other Thai cultural phenomena are already included in UNESCO’s heritage list, such as traditional Thai massage, masked dance performances, and the Songkran festival.
