Kata is one of the most popular areas of Phuket. It features a beautiful bay with a sandy beach, well-developed infrastructure, and numerous cafes and restaurants, while maintaining a more relaxed atmosphere compared to neighboring Patong.

Kata is especially popular with families with children, beach lovers, and surfers who come here during the low season to catch the waves.

Beaches

It is precisely thanks to its beaches that Kata has become one of Phuket’s most popular resort areas. Here, you'll find everything people love about a holiday in Thailand: soft sand, crystal-clear waters, picturesque bays, and stunning sunsets.

Kata Beach

Geo on Google Maps

Kata Beach is the main beach of the area and one of the most beautiful on the island. Its wide stretch of golden sand, gentle entry into the water, and well-developed infrastructure make it an excellent destination for a family vacation.

During the high season, the sea here is usually calm and crystal clear. In the low season, however, waves begin to roll in, turning Kata into the island’s premier surfing spot.

A beachfront promenade lined with cafes, restaurants, massage parlors, and shops runs along the beach, making it easy to spend an entire day here. As sunset approaches, Kata becomes especially picturesque: the sun paints the sea in golden hues, while visitors gather along the shore to enjoy the stunning views and evening strolls.

Watch our video about this beach:

Kata Noi Beach

Geo on Google Maps

A small beach located just south of Kata. It offers fewer crowds, a more peaceful atmosphere, and beautiful scenery.

Most of the shoreline is occupied by the grounds of the Katathani Phuket Beach Resort, so access to the beach is available either via the northern part of the bay by using a staircase or through the southern entrance near the motorbike parking area.

Despite this, the beach remains open to the public. Visitors can rent sun loungers and umbrellas, hire a kayak or jet ski, or even enjoy parasailing over the sea.

Thanks to its more secluded location, Kata Noi is usually less crowded than neighboring Kata, and the overall atmosphere feels noticeably calmer and more relaxing.

We also have a video about Kata Noi:

Nui Beach

Geo on Google Maps

A small, picturesque bay located between Kata Noi and Nai Harn. It features white sand, turquoise waters, rocky cliffs on both sides of the bay, and plenty of beautiful spots for taking photos.

Personally, we consider Nui Beach to be one of the most beautiful beaches on the island.

The area is equipped with relaxation zones, beach cafes, sun loungers, swings, hammocks, and other Instagram-worthy photo spots. Because of this, Nui Beach feels more like a stylish beach club than a classic wild beach.

The sea here is usually clean and clear, and the bay itself is great for a relaxing day, swimming, and snorkeling.

There is an entrance fee to access the beach. You can get there by shuttle from the main road or by sea using a rented boat.

Viewpoints

Kata Viewpoint

Geo on Google Maps

A small viewpoint on the way to the Big Buddha. From here, you get a panoramic view of Kata and Karon bays, green hills, and the island’s west coast.

It is especially beautiful here closer to sunset, when the sea and mountains are painted in warm golden tones.

There is a cafe at the viewpoint, so many people stop here not only for photos but also to enjoy a coffee, fresh coconut, or a fruit shake with a sea view. The menu also includes popular Thai dishes and light snacks.

Another feature of the place is the monkeys, which can sometimes be seen nearby. However, we do not recommend feeding the animals or getting too close to them, as they can be not only cute but also aggressive.

Karon Viewpoint

Geo on Google Maps

One of the most famous viewpoints in Phuket. Despite its name, it is located between Kata Noi and Nai Harn. From here, you can enjoy the famous view of three bays at once: Kata Noi, Kata, and Karon.

Drone flights are allowed here, so it is definitely a must-visit for all fans of this activity.

There is a small pavilion and benches on the site. Vendors often sell their drawings, jewelry, and handmade crafts here, and for an additional fee you can take photos with birds of prey.

Secret Viewpoint by the Big Buddha

Geo on Google Maps

The secret viewpoint is located on the slope of the Big Buddha mountain. Not all tourists know about it, which is definitely a big advantage. From the platform, you can enjoy a panorama of several areas of the island at once: Karon Beach, Kata Bay, Phuket hills, and Chalong.

There is a small cafe on the platform where you can relax and have a drink with a view of the island.

It is easy to get here: follow the road to the Big Buddha. Just before the closed entrance, turn left into the parking area – the viewpoint is literally just a few steps away. We explained it in more detail in the video:

Hotels with Water Parks

You don’t have to stay at a hotel to spend a day at its water park. Many family resorts in Phuket offer a day pass – you can come for a few hours or a full day and use the pools, slides, and kids’ areas without booking a room.

Pamookkoo Resort 4*

Geo on Google Maps
Working hours:
Website

One of the most interesting options for a family holiday in Kata, where you can spend the whole day without booking a room.

The hotel offers one of the most affordable day passes in Phuket: only 499 baht per family (2 adults and 2 children).

The hotel’s main attraction is the Pamookkoo Adventure Pool, which turns an ordinary pool day into a real adventure.

The hotel features a large swimming pool with water slides of different heights and a children’s area with a safe depth.

It is important to note that a day pass does not guarantee the availability of free sun loungers: they must be taken on a first-come, first-served basis as they become available.

Guests can purchase a Water Adventure Day Pass, which is available daily from 10:00 to 19:00. The price is 2,500 baht for an adult, with 2,000 baht returned as a deposit that can be used for food, drinks, or spa treatments. Children under 12 can enter for free.

The day pass also includes access to the Camp Safari kids’ club, billiards, table tennis, one hour of snorkeling with a mask and fins, use of the fitness center, playground, and beach access.

Kata is considered the main surfing area in Phuket. During the low season, surfers come here from all over the island thanks to the consistent waves and the large number of schools. There are also other places in Kata that help you stay in good physical shape.

Surf House Phuket

Geo on Google Maps

Surf House Phuket is one of the most well-known places in Kata for those who want to try surfing but are not yet ready to go out into the sea. Instead of ocean waves, it uses a FlowRider artificial wave, which allows riding in almost any weather conditions.

The format is suitable both for beginners and for those who are already familiar with surfing.

Before starting, the instructors explain the basics and help you get comfortable on the board, so the first attempts are safe and fun. From the outside, the process looks much easier than it really is – falls and a lot of emotions are guaranteed.

In the evenings, Surf House turns into a popular meeting and relaxation spot: there is a bar and restaurant, music is playing, and guests watch the riders from the terrace.

Night Food Market Kata Beach

Geo on Google Maps
Working hours: Mon - Sun: 11:00 - 23:00

This market is hidden between hotels and small streets near the beach, so tourists don’t find it right away. At the same time, the market is popular with locals.

The main reason to come here is the huge variety of Thai street food. Seafood, skewers, pad Thai, fruits, smoothies, desserts, and dozens of other dishes.

The market operates on a food court principle: you choose the dishes you like from different stalls and then sit at the shared tables in the center of the area.

Here you can also buy souvenirs, clothing, accessories, and various small items for your holiday.

Dino Park Mini Golf

Geo on Google Maps
Working hours: Mon - Sun: 10:00 - 22:00
Website

One of the most unusual attractions in Kata for the whole family. Here you can not only play mini-golf, but also walk among waterfalls, caves, volcanoes, and realistic dinosaurs that move and make sounds.

The main part of the park is an 18-hole mini-golf course designed in a prehistoric world theme. The route passes through jungles, rocks, and themed decorations, turning the game into a real adventure.

Even if you are not interested in golf, it is worth stopping by here for the atmosphere and photos. There is a themed restaurant on the premises in a Stone Age style, where dishes are served in unusual tableware with original presentation.

Dino Park is especially enjoyable for children, although adults will also find it interesting to briefly step into the world of dinosaurs. You can easily set aside 2–3 hours for a full visit, including a walk and dinner.

The Big Buddha

Geo on Google Maps

One of the most famous landmarks and viewpoints in Phuket, and a symbol of the island. It is this white statue, 45 meters tall, that most often appears on tourist postcards, photographs, and travel guides.

You can visit the Big Buddha as part of a Phuket City Tour.

The complex area also includes a temple zone, meditation areas, and viewpoints. There is a peaceful atmosphere here, which is very different from the busy tourist areas by the sea.

Hidden Forest Elephant Reserve

Geo on Google Maps
Working hours: Mon - Sat: 09:00 - 17:00
Website
Booking: WhatsApp, Telegram

This elephant sanctuary is not located in Kata, but in the Chalong area; however, the drive here takes very little time, so the Hidden Forest Elephant Reserve can easily be considered an interesting trip from Kata.

The founders of the sanctuary, Kong and Louise Rogerson, have been rescuing elephants for many years and opened their own ethical center in 2023. Here, the animals live in as natural conditions as possible, without riding, performances, or other forms of exploitation.

During the tour, the staff share the stories of the elephants, many of which previously worked in the tourism industry or in logging.

These stories help you better understand what the animals had to go through and why sanctuaries like this are so important.

The program includes transportation, feeding the elephants, a walk around the grounds, and an introduction to the animals’ daily life.

One of the most memorable parts of the excursion is lunch by the lake: guests sit in small gazebos and watch the elephants bathing and playing in the water.

This is one of those encounters with animals that stays in the memory of both adults and children for a long time.

You can book a visit to this sanctuary at a discounted price compared to the official rate using the contacts below:

Kata Beach Community Park

Geo on Google Maps
Working hours: Mon - Sun: 07:30 - 21:00

A pleasant place for walking and relaxation near Kata Beach. Families with children, sports enthusiasts, and local residents come here, so there is always a lively and friendly atmosphere at any time of day.

There are two playgrounds for children, equipped with slides, swings, and carousels. Adults can go for a run along the jogging track that runs around the perimeter of the park or work out on the exercise machines. In the evenings, Zumba classes are sometimes held in the park outdoors.

The area is well-maintained, green, and very clean. Many people specifically come here after the beach to take a walk, relax in the shade of the trees, and simply spend time in a peaceful atmosphere.

Kata is the Phuket that many people imagine before their first trip: beautiful sea, sandy beaches, sunsets, restaurants with views, and a resort atmosphere where everything is within easy reach.

And if you feel like exploring the island further, Kata is a great starting point for trips around Phuket and neighboring provinces. Check out the most interesting places in this and other areas in the sections of our website:
